MacKenzie Scott donates $133.5M to education nonprofit

Good News Notes:

Billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott donated $133.5 million to the education nonprofit Communities In Schools, the organization announced Thursday.

Communities In Schools allocates its staff to schools, where they then work as a go-between for the school and local resources. The group aids students in addressing their needs around education and overall well-being, such as establishing that students have proper access to food, reliable housing, physical and mental health care, and technology to help with their school work.

Communities In Schools operates in 3,000 schools in 19 states. The nonprofit plans to use the donation to bring its work to each of the 70,000 U.S. schools that are eligible for Title I funds. Title I funds are allocated by the federal government to aid schools with “high enrollment numbers of children from low-income families.”

“Today is an important day for students who are underserved, under-resourced, and in need of transformative support to build a brighter future,” President and CEO of Communities In Schools Rey Saldaña said in a press release. “This unrestricted gift allows us to combat the inequities in public education and reimagine the way schools operate and show up for all students.”

Scott has not appeared in a media interview since her divorce from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos in April 2019. However, in a Medium article she posted in December 2021 in regards to philanthropy and the attention it garners, Scott said, “How much or how little money changes hands doesn’t make it philanthropy. Intention and effort make it philanthropy.”….”
