Students donate funds from cancelled events to boy with leukemia

Good News Notes:

Prom and end-of-the year celebrations are looked forward to for months.

But coronavirus had other plans this year.

The pandemic canceled those events for seniors across the country, including at East Rochester Junior/Senior High School. More than $4,000 was raised for celebrations at that school. When COVID canceled them, the funds were just going to be divided up by the students to put $50 back in their pockets.

‘Just to give a check of $50 dollars to each person just didn’t seem like the right thing to do,’ said East Rochester Senior Class President Jeannalise Gomez. “It just didn’t seem right.”

The class voted and agreed to donate the funds that they raised to the Heitsmans, whom they did not even know.

‘It was an honor for us to donate to a better cause then taking it for ourselves,” said Kyle Holt, East Rochester Senior Class Treasurer. “It’s been a tough year for us, but I cant imagine what he’s going through at the same time. We lost only a couple things and we want to give him the opportunity to make it through and experience all those good things.’

Ryker’s mom, Christine, was speechless at the gesture.”
